The U.S. and Colombia have entered into a trade promotion agreement that will remove tariffs and other barriers to trade in goods and services.
Specifically, duties on over 80 percent of American exports of consumer and industrial products will be removed, while certain products such as beef, cotton, wheat, soybeans, and produce will become duty-free.
Last year, U.S. goods exports to Colombia totaled approximately $5.5 billion.
In the meantime, Customs and Border Protection has approved the country’s Port of Cartagena to join the Container Security Initiative (CSI). “We visited the port to do an assessment…and found that the port was one of the most secure in the world,” remarked a former Customs official who took part in the analysis.
