Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards Salutes "Iraqi Freedom"
August 1, 2003
The United Seamen's Service (USS) 2003 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Award will be presented to Charles (Chuck) G. Raymond, Chairman, President and CEO of Horizon Lines, the largest American-flag liner service ocean carrier and Jones Act trade transportation provider. Horizon is the renamed CSX Lines, which descended from Sea-Land Service, the inventor of container shipping. In addition, a Special AOTOS will be presented to the U.S. Military Traffic Management Command for its extraordinary role in the nation's ability to project and sustain combat power that enabled a swift and successful regime change and freedom for the Iraqi people. Much of the success of the operations, both in Iraq and Afghanistan, stem from the bonds that MTMC has forged with industry. The maritime industry's most prestigious honors will be awarded at a gala industry dinner and dance to be held at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, New York City, on November 7, 2003. During the event, USS will also sponsor a special ceremony to honor the maritime unions whose members were instrumental in moving all the necessary equipment to the Middle East, in the true spirit of those in the maritime community who support U.S. defense efforts and those who place their lives on the line to help defend the United States.
