Houston Airport to Build First Cold Storage Facility
Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport will soon have its first refrigerated cargo facility open to all users, which will be used primarily to handle direct shipments of perishables from Central and South America.
Ground will be broken in May for the 60,000 square foot facility, named the International Air CargoCentre II.
Currently, imports of refrigerated cargo like flowers and food are usually routed through Miami. The Houston center would cut delivery times by two days.
A similar project proposed by a private developer last year was halted due to lackluster response from potential customers.
Although the airport does have some existing refrigerated facilities, they’re operated by importers, wholesalers, and commercial airlines, and are not open for general use.
